Privacy Policy

Last updated: August 25, 2026

Moon Explorer is a small app made by one person. It has no user accounts, no ads, and no advertising trackers, and it never asks you who you are. Almost everything it does happens on your phone and stays there. This policy describes the few exceptions honestly, rather than claiming there are none.

What the app does not collect

There is no Moon Explorer server and no Moon Explorer account. The app does not collect your name, email address, contacts, photos, browsing activity, or advertising identifiers. It contains no analytics SDK and shows no ads.

Location

The app uses your location to work out moonrise and moonset times, show what the Moon looks like from where you are tonight, and calculate the Moon's direction for Moon Finder. These calculations run entirely on your device. Your location is stored only on your phone; it is not uploaded to us or shared with anyone.

You can say no to the location permission and the app still works; you'll just need to pick a spot yourself or go without rise and set times. You can revoke the permission at any time in your phone's settings.

Camera and device sensors

Moon Finder uses your camera only to show a live view while you look for the Moon. It combines your location with the phone's compass, orientation, and motion sensors to calculate the Moon's direction and guide you toward it.

Moon Finder calculations and all camera and sensor data are processed on your device. Camera images are not captured, stored, or uploaded. Compass, orientation, motion, and location readings used by Moon Finder are not uploaded or shared.

You can deny or revoke camera access at any time. The rest of Moon Explorer continues to work without it; only Moon Finder's camera guidance is unavailable.

Crash reports

If the app crashes, anonymous crash diagnostics may be sent to Sentry, an error-monitoring service, so the problem can be found and fixed.

A crash report contains the technical details of the failure — where in the code it happened, the app version, and the device model and OS version. It is configured to exclude personal information: no location, no name, no email, no user or advertising identifier, and no record of what you did in the app. There is no performance monitoring and no session recording.

Sentry processes this data on our behalf as a service provider. Their privacy policy: sentry.io/privacy

Purchases

Moon Explorer Pro is a one-time purchase handled entirely by Google Play. Your payment is made to Google, not to us — we never see your card details, billing address, or any other payment information. The app asks Google Play whether your Google account owns the Pro unlock and records the answer on your phone. We receive only the anonymised, aggregated sales reports Google Play gives every developer.

Notifications

If you turn on reminders for full moons or lunar events, those notifications are scheduled locally on your phone by the app. Nothing is sent through a push server — we don't operate one.

Sharing

Moon Explorer can create picture cards of the Moon for you to share, and can share a link to the app. A card is created only when you tap share, and it is handed to Android's standard share menu so you choose where it goes. We never see it.

Feedback email

If you use "Send feedback", the app opens a draft in your own email app. The draft includes the app version, your device model, and your OS version, so problems can be reproduced — you can read and delete any of it before sending. Nothing is sent until you press send in your email app, and it arrives as an ordinary email.

Content loaded from the internet

Some guided tours show photographs hosted by NASA, the Planetary Society, and Wikimedia. Some Moon Academy lessons link to YouTube videos. When the app loads one of these images, or when you tap through to a video, your device contacts that organisation's servers directly, and their privacy policies apply to that request — not this one. The app sends them nothing about you beyond what any web request necessarily reveals.

This website

This site (moonexplorer.app) uses Vercel Analytics to count page views. It is privacy-focused and cookie-free: it records no cookies, no persistent identifier, and no cross-site tracking, and it cannot be used to identify you. This applies to the website only — the app itself contains no analytics at all.

Children

The app is suitable for all ages. It collects no personal information from anyone, children included.

Your choices

You can revoke location permission or turn off notifications at any time in your phone's settings. Uninstalling the app removes everything it stored on your device. To ask what crash-report data may relate to you, or to have it deleted, email the address below.

Changes

If the app changes in a way that affects any of the above, this policy will be updated first, and the "last updated" date at the top will change.
